Let’s face it! The blue half of merseyside was playing much, much better football than the red half on Saturday. Perhaps Liverpool’s boss, Rafael Benitaz will be complaining that they were not used to playing during lunch time. Or even, blame it on his selection, which was totally out of the blue! Hmm… Blue? Yeah! For a long, long time Everton has been in the red shadows of Liverpool and for once, the game on saturday silenced them. I was glad Benitaz played Pepe Reina instead of Jerzy Dudek. What a bloody clown Reina turn out to be?! Or perhaps thats what he does best – clowning around in his 6-yard box area. The third goal by Andy Johnson was a gift from Reina. Thank you very much, says Johnson. To think Reina’s a top-class goalkeeper. Hahahah!!
I was reading the stats on evertonfc.com before the 204th merseyside derby and all of the statistics was in favour of Liverpool. Check this out. Everton only won once in their past 14 encounters against Liverpool. Having Andy Johnson in a blue shirt paid off, as he scored the winning goal for his previous club, Crystal Palace, back in 2004, against Liverpool. Johnson scored 2 goals on Saturday. Tim Cahill made history by being the first player to score against Liverpool in 3 consecutive seasons, in 102 years. The last time a Everton player did it was Alex “Sandy” Young between 1901/2 to 1903/4.
Everton has not scored 3 goals against Liverpool since August 1966, when the Toffees won 3-1. That’s a long 40 years! This was by far one of the best performance by Everton in a long time. Actually, I thought I’ve seen the best of Everton when we beat Spurs, with 10 men, a fortnight ago. But to win a derby game is more sweet than gulping condensed milk by itself (I’d gladly gulp it down). As Tim Cahill puts it before the derby, “We wanna have bragging rights”!!! Well, to be above Liverpool in the league table 2 seasons ago was good. But to beat them by 3 clear goals in a merseyside derby, its GREAT feeling! I’m definitely gonna relived this match over and over again. Time to put my DVD Recorder to good use.
C’mon Everton!!!
