Singapore celebrates her 42nd birthday@Marina Bay

Finally, the authorities have decided to pull down the rollers at the National Stadium. Since 1973, (that’s the year I was born by the way,) many of the older generation of Singaporean will be able to tell you how they squeezed thru the crowds to get inside the stadium, just to watch the Singapore soccer team play against the other states of Malaysia. Those were the 70s & 80s, when we were in the Malaysia League. Of cos, the Stadium also hosted numerous parades, events, concerts, etc…

We host one final soccer game tonite, against the Australian. We didn’t win. In any case, we were not touted to win. Odds at Singapore Pools gave Singapore a $10.50 win for every dollar bet, if we had won. Australia was the clear favourites. They ran away 3-0 winners in a match that should’ve seen Singapore scoring at least a goal or two. Indra Sahdan missed a few chances. But we’re playing the mighty Aussies for the first time, since their insertion into the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Japan and China will have to deal with the Aussies now. =) But watching the Lions play tonite was very heartening. We were not at all afraid of the Aussies. In fact, we were attacking as much as they did. But in the end, experience counts. For most of the players in the Aussie team were plying their trade in some of the top clubs in Europe. And so, that was the final game to be played in the National Stadium. President SR Nathan would’ve declared the Stadium closed by now. We shall await the brand new Arena at the Sports Hub in the near future. Another Wembley perhaps?!

This year, the NDP will be held at the Marina Bay area. Just across the Marina South Park, and outside Ritz Carlton Hotel, Singapore. They erected a 27,000 seats viewing gallery. This will, in the future, be the venue for other water events. But for the next 5 years, the National Day Parade will be held here. I am not involved in this year’s parade, but still took time to stroll down Merlion Park this evening to capture some shots of the parade. The stateflag was flying over my head! I must say it looks weird to be outside of the parade ground this year. But from a different perspective, its nice to view the parade from afar. =) I’m not trying to console myself here. I was actually “invited” to do my usual photography in the parade, but I chose not to. Weekends are precious! Haha! But not today, cos I was doing nothing the whole morning. But lazing around ain’t that bad an idea afterall… =P

I met this Ah Pak at the Merlion Park. He was cantonese and I was struggling to converse with him. =( But I managed rather well… “Mmm Chor ler” =P Anyway, he was sharing lots of his memories during his younger days. Ah Pak is now 84 years old. He stays somewhere along Yio Chu Kang Road. Each year, he will make his way to the Merlion Park just to catch a glimpse of the place. He was awed by the set-up of the new gallery and what have evolved in the area. I’ve learnt something from Ah Pak today. Time flies… So, treasure the ones you love well, people…

More fire please? Ok, next year maybe…

Bornfire 2007, originally uploaded by Lobinhoot.

After 3 exciting and fiery nights of fire-twirlings, staffs tossings, poi spinning, etc… Bornfire finally came to a close on Sunday, 24 june 07. This was the second successive year that Bornfire Singapore happened here at the Esplanade. And judging by the crowd turn-out and response, I’m pretty sure Bornfire will be here to stay. Unless the people at the Singapore Arts Festival (and Esplanade) think that the artistes weren’t good enuff. But I’m telling you, these artistes who came here each year made so much effort just to get to Singapore. And I’m not saying “kuching kurup” kind of Fire Artistes. They are Internationally Acclaimed artistes. Antti Suniala, from Finland. Chris, from Australia. Imar, from France. There was a group from Japan this year. A couple from France & Thailand. Local talent groups, Fireflys & Wayang Alos. They deserved every credit and praise for making Bornfire in Singapore such a success! Of cos, for the organisers, too. Xyn & Ian… These 2 are the driving force behind every Bornfire in Singapore. I will continue to support for sure. Cos I cannot contribute in any other form, but photography. =P

Day 2 of Bornfire 2007 and it was getting better and better! Met lotsa familiar faces and good friends. Its a great time to just gather during this period (where there’s no English Premier League matches being played on a Saturday, that is). There were 6 acts last nite at Bornfire 2007. Wayang & Elementrix were “repeats”, while Fireflys did their second piece, titled “Kaleidescope”. There were some collaborations too. Xyn & Chris, together with their Japanese counterpart did a piece together. Antti and Imar, from France, wrapped up the night with a wonderful duo performance! Be sure to catch more of their actions on my flickr! And tonite’s the final nite of Bornfire 2007, so be sure to catch them in action at the Esplanade from 8pm (local time). =D

Adventure Singapore 2007

I had the opportunity to shoot the Adventure Singapore Race 2007 with a couple of my buddies. =) Its been a long, long time since I updated my blog. I tot it might have “shut down” due to lack of “writings”. Luckily its still around. Haha! Phew! So last weekend was spent shooting racers, as I travelled around Singapore, together with the participants of the Adventure Singapore 2007. The Mens’ Open winners were the reigning champs. Amazing how these 2 buddies could do it time and again, each year.

I did this purely on a voluntary basis. =D I’ve to admit – it was my wife who volunteered me in the first place. But it was good fun. Less some minor “hiccups”, of cos. Which event doesn’t have any hitches? I bet you when Christina Auguerila come here to do her concert next week, there will be hitches. Oops… Hope I didn’t offend any fans out there. But I am sure her fans dun visit my blog. Haha! =P

Anyway, its gonna be like this for me from now on. No more late nights (beyond 10pm is considered late). Cos I’ve to get up at 5:30am each day to get to work. Casper is finally back after a week’s lodging at Sandy’s. I miss Casper very much, actually. =) So I am glad he is back. How I wished I could bring him to work everyday. Boss, if you are reading, please let me hear some miracle news. =D Time to hit the sack now!! Its 11:10pm. Yawnz~
